Box in black-lacquered wood.

Overview

This is an incense storage box which layered colored papers over and over. Both outer and inner surfaces are coated with black lacquer, and it has KAKEGO (a shallow inner box fit to the edge of the box) inside of the box. Its lid and body are decorated with grape patterns in inlaid mother-of-pearl while SHIPPOUTSUNAGI, a pattern with 4 different circles on all corners of a circle, are drawn on the surface. Gold leaf is attached on the back of a grape berry pattern, and its deep gloss gives a graceful impression. Daffodils, plum trees and chrysanthemum arabesques are expressed on KAKEGO with inlaid mother-of-pearl.
