Writing paper box (ryoushibako) in black-lacquered wood.

The outer surface of this writing paper box is coated with black lacquer, and cinnabar lacquer on the inner surface. Variety of shells are expressed by URUSHIE (motifs drawn with lacquer on the surface) and inlaid mother-of-pearl. During the Ryukyu Kingdom era, a writing paper box and inkstone case were made as a pair.
